Penn State Film & Discussion Series
The Film & Discussion Series, which is open to the public, consists of five movies, including pre-film lectures and stimulating post-film discussions. The series can be taken as a one-credit course or as a non-credit offering. Participants earn continuing education credits upon completion of the series. Continuing Education is pleased to have Bill Bachman return as the instructor for the movie series. Bill has taught a variety of communications courses for Penn State Wilkes-Barre since 1986. He currently teaches introduction to public speaking, public speech writing, mass media and society, propaganda and persuasion, and media effects. October 24: October Sky (1999/PG) In the 1950's mining town of Coalwood, WV, Homer Hickam is a kid with only one future in sight; to work in the local coal mine like his father. However, in October 1957 everything changes when the first artificial satellite Sputnik, goes into orbit. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Laura Dern.
